Professional Qualifications

Fellows and Professional Members of the Institute can qualify for registration with the Engineering Council as Chartered Engineers (CEng), Associate Members (Incorporated division) can qualify as Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Technicians as Engineering Technicians (EngTech). Fellows and Professional members can also qualify for registration as Chartered Scientists (CSci) with the Science Council. Eligibility for registration is assessed by the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining on behalf of the Engineering and Science Councils and is available only to persons who have produced evidence of relevant qualifications, training and experience. Summaries of the requirements for the qualifications are given below.

Applicants are expected to apply their respective codes of professional conduct and exercise a responsible attitude to society with a regard to the ethical, economic and environmental impact of technical change and need.

Registration: what does it mean for me?

Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their professional engineering experience and managerial skills. They must have practical knowledge and understanding of the engineering principles relevant to the disciplines of the Institute. They must also demonstrate the use of such knowledge to contribute to the design, manufacture, maintenance, testing and safety of components, devices and structures or the control of process plant.

Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their professional engineering experience and managerial skills. They must have practical knowledge and understanding of the production, fabrication and service performance of one or more groups of materials or minerals. They must also demonstrate the use of such knowledge to contribute to the design, manufacture, maintenance, testing and safety of components, devices and structures or the control of process / mine plant.

Engineering Technician (EngTech)

Applicants for Engineering Technician must be able to demonstrate their technical experience and their practical skills in working with engineering materials. They must have practical knowledge and understanding of the production, fabrication and service performance of one or more groups of materials. They must also demonstrate the use of such knowledge to contribute to the manufacture, maintenance, testing and safety of components, devices and structures or the control process plant.

Chartered Scientist (CSci)

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their professional scientific experience and managerial skills. They must have practical knowledge and understanding of the production, fabrication and service performance of one or more groups of materials or minerals. They must also demonstrate the use of such knowledge to contribute to the safe use of components, devices and/or structures or the control of process plant.
