Council 2006-2007

Mr C G Smith
Councillor representing Scotland

As a mineral geologist with over 38 years experience in exploration and development in Scotland I have a comprehensive knowledge of the nation's resources and a good understanding of the many problems facing today's extractive industry. Since retiring from the British Geological Survey in 2000 I have cofounded Border Geo-Science, an independent consultancy, based in central Scotland, that specialises in the provision of geologically-based minerals information and advice to the private and public sectors. I am also registered as an expert witness. My priorities are to see the Institute grow at local level, to promote greater interaction between local branches and societies, and to encourage awareness, particularly at secondary education level, of the need for minerals within a sustainable framework. In addition to serving on Council, I am a member of the Applied Earth Science Editorial Board and a past president of the Scotland Branch.
