Plenary Lecture: Thursday 15 May 2008

Materials for the future - A UK perspective
David Bott, Materials UK, London, UK

David Bott is Chief Executive of Materials UK, the representative body for the UK materials community. As such, he has forged links with both industry and academia to identify business opportunities that could lead to economic advantage. In this role he strives to make UK materials-related companies more effective.

Bott has held an interest in materials since his school days, supplementing his general chemistry education by reading about polymers. He soon knew he wanted to be a polymer scientist and attended the University of Sussex determined to pursue this career.

Bott’s PhD on the lifetimes of polymers with different antioxidants was sponsored by ICI Plastics. He has headed the corporate research group of Courtaulds and was seconded to the USA to implement the thermal dye transfer process which he helped to develop. Bott has not lost the enthusiasm he had in his early career, ‘I still find playing with materials interesting!’
